There is nothing more heartbreaking than watching an abandoned animal that seems to have lost all hope.
But I'm always touched by the countless animal-related news stories of humans stepping up to the plate and helping those animals in need — like this bunny sanctuary that built a DIY wheelchair for one of their disabled rabbits.
And when I discovered how this rescue sanctuary was going the extra mile for their animal family, I had to learn more!
The Donkey Sanctuary Bonaire has been saving abandoned donkeys for over 20 years on a small Dutch island. Thousands of these poor creatures have been left to fend for themselves on the tiny isle, often starving to death or getting struck by cars.
Thankfully, the Donkey Sanctuary is doing all they can to help, particularly in the case of one special donkey. After losing his mother, he's been adopted by the Sanctuary and now faces the prospect of a bright and healthy future!

This tiny donkey’s life was met with unimaginable tragedy — his mother was hit by a car and killed, leaving this poor creature with no family and nowhere to go.
Thankfully, all was not lost. Marina Melis and the loving staff at the Donkey Sanctuary Bonaire found the orphaned donkey and gave him a safe place to call home.
The Sanctuary is a Bonaire island staple. Its doors have been open to donkeys for over 20 years.
Surprisingly enough, the island itself is overrun with these poor abandoned donkeys, as the animal was originally brought over from Spain in the 17th century.
For the past few hundred years, they've become a feral species, forced to brace themselves against hunger and thirst on this dry and desolate island.
The crew at Bonaire is expertly skilled, however, in taking care of these sweet abandoned creatures — and their newest friend, dubbed "Perry" by the staff, is no different.
Perry seems to be getting along swimmingly with the other donkeys, and growing stronger by the day!
"He is drinking from the bottle and is so sweet and brave. He is with the other orphans in the stable [so] he doesn't feel so lonely," the Sanctuary shared on Facebook.
Perry and other animals like him continue to stay strong with the help of loving animal rescue centers and sanctuaries such as the Donkey Sanctuary Bonaire.
