When Butterscotch was brought to Animal Place, rescuers were in for a surprise: The goat was almost three months pregnant.
Of course that wasn't much of a problem for the farm animal sanctuary in Grass Valley, CA, which is glad that the mother and baby will stay together.
Under different circumstances, Butterscotch and baby Bella would've been separated shortly after birth because the former is a dairy goat, says Rescue Ranch Manager Jan Galeazzi. "They have to stay impregnated to produce milk and when they do give birth to their babies, their babies are taken away from them at birth so we can have the milk rather than the babies," Galeazzi explains. "So it's really wonderful that this is a baby that gets to stay with her mother."
As you'll see in the video below, Butterscotch and baby Bella have a strong bond similar to that of other mammals, including elephants who can even become depressed if they are separated from one another.
Little Bella follows her mama everywhere and pays close attention to her every move hoping to learn from her.
"You can see how happy and relaxed she is," Galeazzi says of little Bella. "She's with her mother, which is what babies need."
