Each year, more than 4,000 koalas are hit by cars in Australia — 60% of which ultimately die from their sustained injuries. Their status is now listed as "vulnerable" by the Australian Government.
But thanks to the tireless efforts of Wildlife Warriors — a conservation effort founded by Steve and Terry Irwin — something is being done to protect and preserve these precious creatures.
Every month, an average of 70 koalas come through the Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital, the wildlife care and rehabilitation branch of Wildlife Warriors. They treat orphaned, injured, and sick koalas from all around the nation.
But when these two koalas were wheeled through their doors, the doctors had no idea their life-saving efforts would suddenly go viral — all thanks to one little joey who loved to hug his mom.
Now, the work of these wonderful doctors and the love of these sweet koalas are sweeping the nation. When you see these amazing photos, you'll understand why.

Mama koala, Lizzy, and her little joey, Phantom, were attempting to cross a busy highway in Brisbane, Australia, when tragedy struck: The two were hit by a car. They were instantly rushed to the hospital.

Lizzy had suffered facial injury and a collapsed lung, and now she required life-saving surgery. But miraculously, baby Phantom was totally unscathed. However, at only 6 months old, the little joey was too young to be separated from his mom...

So doctors decided to do something unique: To bring the little joey and his ailing mom some comfort, they let Phantom remain with Lizzy during her surgery. He happily nuzzled her neck while doctors worked diligently.

Now, perhaps due to the comforting hugs and snuggling of this brave little joey, Lizzy is doing just fine. Her surgery was a success and she is now on the road to recovery.

We wish little Phantom and his beautiful mom Lizzy all the best, and we're so glad to see they're alive and well!
