Loggerhead sea turtles are one of the most enormous creatures that roam the ocean, but even they like to take a stroll on land every now and again. However, the boardwalk or a beach town is no place for such a large specimen that can weigh from 250 to well over 1,000 pounds!
So when a bunch of beachgoers encountered one of these incredible sea beasts who appeared to be lost and disoriented, they took action. So much for a lazy, laid-back day at beach!
The Good Samaritans came together and laid down a huge blue tarp and waited for the turtle to slowly make his way to the middle. With a gentle nudge, the big fella slid right into their “trap.”
Carefully, they pulled each end up together and carried the massive sea turtle to the shore. Onlookers appeared to be in awe and were snapping photos and videos as it made its way home.
Sea creatures win us over all of the time. For example, we've seen an adorable nest of newly hatched baby sea turtles and the bravery of one man who jumped into the ocean to save a 700-pound sea turtle.
These gigantic beasts prefer coastal habitats, yet they often frequent inland water bodies and will travel hundreds of miles out to sea.
Loggerhead turtles are the most abundant of all the marine turtle species in U.S. waters, however, the population is in decline due to pollution, shrimp trawling, and development in their nesting areas, and has kept them on the threatened species list since 1978, according to National Geographic. That's why rescues like these are even more incredible to watch.
