Beyoncé Performs Amazing Version Of “Swing Low” In 2003 Film ‘The Fighting Temptations’

Back in 2003, superstar Beyoncé Knowles and actor Cuba Gooding Jr. teamed up to make one of the most underrated movies of the decade: The Fighting Temptations.

The plot follows the story of Gooding's character, Darrin Hill, who is in the attempt of reviving his old church choir in order to win a gospel music competition. With the help of the beautiful lounge singer Lilly, played by Knowles, they must work to bring the whole church together, all while forming a steamy romantic relationship.

It turns out that Darrin is a bit of a liar and eventually those lies catch up with him. He's forced to move back to New York City to work as an advertising executive, but he quickly realizes he misses his old town and Lilly. The movie ends with the couple happily married with a baby of their own.

While the film itself didn't receive the kindest of reviews, there was one thing that everyone could easily agree with: the music. Audiences were drawn to the uplifting story, but above all else the soundtrack featuring Beyoncé along with an incredibly talented chorus of backup vocalists is what got everyone really excited.

Along with the intense cover of "Fever," you can watch Beyoncé absolutely kill the gospel song "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot," an old spiritual with ties to the days of slavery and the underground railroad. The song gained new appreciation during the 1960's civil rights movement as a rallying point for equality for all.
