As we're all trudging through those hot and muggy summer months, it's hard enough dealing with the humidity, let alone the massive amounts of annoying insects that seem intent on sucking out all of your blood this season.
While bug spray is definitely one way to deal with this problem, it is certainly a good idea to cover all of your bases and come up with a few extra "backup" ideas just to make sure you won't feel that familiar sting.
There are definitely a lot of natural ways to scare the mosquitos away, and after looking through this simple "do it yourself" project, all we can say is we're doing this tonight!
All you'll be needing for this easy home project is:
- A dead birch branch
- A popcorn tin with lid
- A Mason jar
This simple project won’t eat up your whole day and the oils hidden within the birch tree naturally annoy any pesky pests and allow you to enjoy your backyard in peace!

Start off by getting yourself a simple mason jar.
Grab an old popcorn tin along with its top.
Collect some birch bark. Peel off strips from a dead tree, but don't use a live tree as this can damage it. Once you have that you'll be ready to begin!
Poke a hole into the bottom of your popcorn tin.
Stuff the strips of bark into your popcorn tin vertically.
Dig a small hole and place your Mason jar just deep enough so the opening is flush with the surface.
Place your popcorn tin on top of the buried Mason jar, make sure the hole at the bottom of your tin is over the opening of your jar.
Build a fire around your popcorn tin. Let it burn for about 40 minutes before you kick the wood away. Let everything cool and using gloves, pull the Mason jar out of the hole.
You now have a natural substitute for bug repellant! Happily apply it to your neck and arms for a safe way to scare away bugs this summer!
Stay cool this summer! Let us know if you tried this out and how it worked for you.
