How many of us can say our wishes have come true?
Each of us has probably sat in front of a birthday cake, closed our eyes, and made a wish before blowing out the candles.
For young Estefano Reano, the wish he made came true faster than he could have ever imagined.
Reano was born with a structural heart condition known as single ventrical heart defect. Reano's heart wasn't using its four chambers properly, and as such, he'd already had five open heart surgeries since he was 2. Unfortunately, the older he got, the more his heart would fail.
So, when he was about to blow out the candles on his 14th birthday, all he could wish for was a new heart.
Then, exactly 40 minutes later, his stepfather Alfonso Ospino received a phone call.
"There is another gift waiting for you," he told Estefano.
The Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital had a heart for the boy, making him the hospital's 30th recipient. He had waited two years for a transplant.
As the surgery began and Reano was put under, all the surgeons and nurses suddenly stopped and turned to the camera that was recording them.
In unison, they began to sing "Happy Birthday," making a memory that Reano would no doubt cherish forever.
After two weeks in the hospital post-surgery, Reano was released. "I feel very energetic, and very, very happy," he says in the video below.
