I grew up in upstate New York, which, like much of the Northeast, is famous for its incredible autumn weather.
Fall has always been my absolute favorite season. And the best thing to do once the leaves start changing colors? Go apple picking!
Pulling apples from trees, looking at pumpkins in the patch, and going on a hayride is fun and all. But the best part about going apple picking is undoubtedly the part at the end: when you get to sit inside, sip hot apple cider, and eat apple cider donuts.
Once I moved to New York City, I started missing the fun fall activities of the more rural upstate. I've been searching desperately for apple cider donut recipes for the past two years, but none have lived up to my expectations — until now.
Although these cinnamon sugar donuts aren't exactly like the ones I got used to having at apple orchards, they're pretty darn close, and they're so easy to make!
Ingredients
- canned biscuits
- butter
- sugar
- cinnamon
- vegetable oil
Instructions Step #1: Heat Vegetable Oil In Pan
Pour vegetable oil into a deep pan — the oil should be about half an inch deep.
Turn the heat to medium, and let the oil begin to warm up while you start the next few steps.
Step #2: Cut Holes In The Biscuits
Next, pop open your can of premade biscuit dough, and lay out all the biscuits.
Using a tiny, circular cookie cutter, cut out the center of the biscuits, turning them into donut shapes.
(Don't throw out the biscuit centers — make yourself some yummy donut hole bites!)
Step #3: Drop Donuts Into Oil
Once your donuts are ready to go, drop them into the oil, and let them fry.
When the donuts hit the oil, it should start to bubble — if it doesn't, turn up the heat a little bit.
Step #4: Flip Donuts When They’re Golden Brown
When the donuts turn a lovely golden brown color, flip them over to let the other side cook.
You can use a large spoon or tongs for this step — whichever you prefer.
Step #5: Place Donuts On Paper Towel-Lined Plate
While the donuts are frying, put a few paper towels onto a plate.
Once both sides of the donuts are golden, take the donuts out of the oil, and lay them on the paper towels.
Step #6: Melt Butter In The Microwave
As the donuts are cooling on paper towels, melt a stick of butter in the microwave.
Make sure the bowl is large enough to dip the donuts into!
Step #7: Combine Cinnamon And Sugar In A Bowl
Next, mix cinnamon and sugar together in another bowl.
The amount of cinnamon and sugar is up to you — if you want, you can add a little salt or nutmeg to your mixture as well!
Step #8: Dip Donuts In Butter, Then Into Cinnamon Sugar
Once the donuts have cooled enough to hold them, dip them in the butter, then dip them into the cinnamon sugar mixture.
Make sure to get cinnamon and sugar on both sides of the donuts!
This step will be a little messy, but it's totally worth it.
Enjoy!
Finally, enjoy your cinnamon sugar donuts!
