Black Light Revelations: 8 Surprising Things That May Be Hiding In Plain Sight

I used to be obsessed with the show CSI: Crime Scene Investigation. I knew I could count on every episode unveiling an important clue by shining the handy black light on the area where an attack took place.

It basically taught me that we're pretty much constantly surrounded by icky germs and bacteria that we can only see by switching on the spooky blue beams — and that most criminals are hilariously bad at cleaning up after themselves. It also made me wonder about what might be lurking in plain sight in my own home.

As much as we'd like to think we're giving our abodes a real good scrub, there's always the potential to miss a spot or barely scratch the surface. Also, you might not notice some creepy crawlies and critters scurrying away undetected by relying on just your naked eye.

Take a look below to see what you might uncover lurking in your home — fair warning, some of these are pretty gross!

Not only could it be growing in the crevices of your home, but you and your pets could be showing signs of ringworm or athlete's foot if you see bright spots popping up under the light.

2. Rat Residue

Like dogs, rats like to mark their territory by leaving a trail of tiny specs that can go unnoticed. The black light can reveal their icky route around your carpet.

3. Urine Splatter

Whether you're potty training your kids or your pets, this is a good way to make sure you're really getting those little accidents cleaned up.

4. Skin Disease

Dermatologists often use black light to detect skin damage from UV rays or, as you see above, conditions like vitiligo. So maybe turn the light on yourself the next time you're scoping out your home.

5. Vomit Residue

Again, this one is handy for both you and your pets after feeling under the weather, making sure to wipe away all those germs.

6. Sweat Stains

You might think your bed sheets and gym clothes are fine after going through the wash, but the stubborn stuff might still be clinging to the fabric.

7. Saliva

You might be surprised by a nightly habit of drooling on your pillow if you discover the tell-tale stains under the light.

Hopefully you won't find too much of this, but you might have missed a spot while cleaning up an unfortunate mishap.
