Bobby McFerrin Demonstrates The Power Of The Pentatonic Scale

Musician Bobby McFerrin has made quite a name for himself over the years. Writing and singing the successful tune "Don't Worry Be Happy," McFerrin is no stranger to skillfully playing a multitude of musical instruments. But it wasn't until he "played" a whole audience full of people before a group of scientists that he really proved how much of a musical master he truly was.

The video begins with McFerrin telling the audience to sing a note whenever he jumps. Using the stage as a huge theoretical piano, McFerrin jumps from left to right, and the audience keeps up with him perfectly.

Playing with the pentatonic scale, the whole audience just naturally knows which note to sing next. It doesn't matter how high or low McFerrin goes onstage, the audience manages to sing the exact right note at the exact right time.

When McFerrin is finished showing off this amazing skill that all humans have, he calmly sits down amongst the stunned scientists, who are all absolutely speechless at what just occurred in front of their eyes. The musician tells them that no matter where he visits all over the world, humans of all languages and cultures instantly understand the pentatonic scale.

The ancient nature of this scale must go back hundreds of thousands of years into our very DNA. It's just something we all seem to understand, and McFerrin did a brilliant job at showing that to us!
