The Iditarod Trail is a world famous trail system in Alaska that is more than a thousand miles in length. It's known for its sled dog races, but in the story of Bruce and Diana, it is also the setting for an amazing proposal.
This particular proposal occurred 23 years ago — in fact, it almost didn't occur at all!
Bruce Maroney, an Iditarod Trail pilot, met his future wife, Diana on the trail. She was working logistics for the race.
They met in 1990 and soon began dating. They had been together for four years before they decided to go against each other in the race.
Diana was an established veteran, while it was Bruce's first race. Coincidently, it was she who had originally taught him how to race!
"I had the good team, he had the puppy team," Diana said in the video below.
She had no idea that this particular race was more about bragging rights.
At the end, Bruce was going to propose — but his plan hit a few shocking roadblocks along the way.
Not only was Diana clearly far ahead in the race, Bruce ended up in a tent during a rest period, and someone made the mistake of running a propane heater.
Those inside were soon being poisoned by carbon monoxide. All the while, Diana had no idea.
Luckily, he was rescued before something tragic happened.
Diana, by that point, was way too far ahead for his plan to succeed as originally imagined, but he wasn't ready to give up.
