Man Gives His Photographer Fiancée An Engagement Ring In A Camera-Themed Box

Nowadays people propose in all kinds of ways.

There is the traditional dinner proposal, where the meal is followed by something even sweeter than dessert. Then there are the more contemporary, over-the-top proposals that involve scavenger hunts, flash mobs, and epic overtures that take 365 days to plan like the one this one love-struck man orchestrated when he popped the question to his wife-to-be.

Personally, my favorite type of proposals are the ones that land somewhere between conventional and crazy — the ones where the thought behind the proposal sparkles just as brightly as an engagement ring.

Reddit user chalker7 did just that when he recently decided to propose to his photographer girlfriend. He decided to offer her his grandmother’s engagement ring from the 1940s, but he wanted to do something even more special — he wanted to create something with his own two hands that showed his future wife that he knew and cared very deeply about who she was.

The amazing result is not only romantic it’s also something you have to see with your own two eyes…

First thing he did was mill some Ipe wood on his ShopBot for a base. His intention? To make a beautiful ring box that is so stunning, you won’t believe your eyes when you see the final product.

Once the base of the box was milled, he then hand carved the box and added some bronze detailing. He wanted the outside of the box to look like the lens of a camera.

After the base was done, it was time to make the stunning feature that makes this box so special. To do this, first he had to mill bronze shim stock on a Roland MDX-20 Modela mill.

The shapes he milled were several tiny leaves. He then soldered studs on both sides of each leaf.

He then installed the leaves into a laser-cut top.

Most of the leaves popped right in, though, “Getting those last few leaves in was tough,” he admitted.

He then took some red Nerf darts, and cut them to make a custom cushion that would hold his grandmother’s ring in place.

He then covered the bright red foam cushion with some velvet and 3M Super 77 spray glue.

He then flipped this top over and placed it on the top of his hand-carved box. With the top closed, as it is here, it looks like the aperture for a camera.

When he twists the top, the aperture opens to reveal his grandmother’s ring. “She passed recently and we were honored to be able to keep the ring in the family,” he wrote.

But you have to see the box get opened and closed in action to fully appreciate it’s beauty. It actually looks like the aperture of a camera! “A whole lot of hours went into this,” he wrote. “But I'm pleased with the results.” Especially since he also sha
