New Brazilian Haircutting Technique Sets Women’s Hair On Fire

Yes, that hairdresser is using a candle to light this woman's hair on fire. Yikes!

This isn't the "evil hairdresser prank," either, this is totally real.

I think most of us know from our too-much-hairspray days that hair is highly flammable, especially when it has product in it.

Nevertheless, many Americans are clamoring about this old Brazilian technique called Velaterapia.

Velaterapia is described as"…a process where a flame cauterizes the hair, leaving behind a passage of nutrients to its interior, removes split ends and the impermeability of the hair caused by brushing and other chemicals."

First the hair is separated and parted into sections. Each section is twisted and with a candle the professional carefully and meticulously burns away the fly-away hairs and split ends.

The entire procedure takes two to three hours. While it's a recent import to the United States, thanks to supermodels like Barbara Fialho raving about it, it has been practiced in South America since the 1960s.

Although this may seem like a new, interesting way to trim your hair, we cannot emphasize enough: Do not try this at home! Leave playing with fire to the professionals for your own safety and security!
