In July 2017, a woman named Xiao Xuan was picking up a few groceries at her local supermarket in Tainan, Taiwan. During her trip, she happened to spot an older gentleman who was waiting in line at the cashier who appeared to be wearing a diaper on his bottom half without any pants.
Xiao couldn’t help but notice that the older man appeared to be in a state of confusion as he waited in line to pay. Her grandfather suffered from Alzheimer’s disease in his senior years, so she wondered to herself if this older gentleman was fighting the same progressive form of dementia.
She also noticed how kind and patient the staff were with the older man as it appeared that he wanted to purchase milk in bulk. Further confusion set in when the elderly gentleman also wanted purchase a giant bottle of milk.
Instead of getting annoyed or promptly shutting him down, Xiao observed the cashier make a compromise with the customer as he tried to inform him that he likely wouldn’t be able to finish all the milk he wanted, so he should buy a smaller amount.
After the older man finished his purchase, Xiao watched the patient cashier from behind the counter follow him out of the store and down the street. When the cashier came back into the store on his own, Xiao couldn’t help but ask what had just happened.
The service worker explained that the elderly man had been coming into their store for years and they had grown accustomed to watching over him as he had a tendency to get confused. He lived nearby and the cashier just wanted to ensure that he made it home safely.
