Sometimes, it's best just to give in…
Sure, this goes against everything you've been hearing your entire life, from putting up a good fight to standing tall in the face of that which could defeat you. It's true, we humans are not programmed to just give over easily. As it turns out, neither are certain members of the animal kingdom.
You've probably seen it before, like when this little sugar glider fell asleep mid-meal, or when this little kitten fell asleep while drinking water out of a Mason jar. Both of these creatures were ready to just let go and give over to sleep. Let's face it: There's nothing quite like the feeling of being overwhelmingly sleepy. It invades your every thought and action, can cause you to take drastic measures to stay awake, and is every bit as potent as the strongest chemical sedative out there. We all need sleep…not only to survive, but to function.
So why then are humans and animals alike so intent on fighting it off? There are many reasons why we humans fight sleep, either on purpose because of the demands of daily life, or inadvertently, due to an unbalanced diet and not enough exercise. However, in the animal kingdom, the reasons for fighting off sleep are more primal. Particularly with smaller animals who make for easy prey, maintaining a state of wakefulness means that they are less of a target for their predators, so they have good reason to want to prop their eyelids open for a bit longer than they might otherwise like to. The rest of us? We should all just go to bed!
