When Céline Dion paid a visit to The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, the two got right to the important stuff first: Titanic.
Although Céline came by to promote her album, Courage, Jimmy couldn't help himself. He jumped right in: "Céline, I always try to ask you a good Titanic question every time you're here because I know you probably love those."
Ever a good sport, Céline shot back, "You know that's a long time ago, right?"
Jimmy kept pushing and asked if Jack could have fit on the door in the infamous scene toward the end of the film, had Rose just "scooted over a little bit." Céline tried to dodge the question at first. "Don't put me in trouble," she said. "What if they want to do a Titanic No. 2?"

But the "My Heart Will Go On" singer quickly decided to settle the score once and for all. She said, "First of all, if you look closely [at] the picture, Rose is maybe dead or totally frozen, and she's not quite all there, okay? Second of all, he doesn't need an invitation. Come on, baby! Make himself comfortable. Jump in. You know?"
Céline kept going, saying, "And then who did not think about this guy who is in the middle of the frozen ocean and that maybe all his body is so frozen that he didn't have the strength to …" and then she began to sing "Jump (For My Love)" by the Pointer Singers.
In case you need a reminder, the scene in question is toward the end of the film, after the ship has sunk and Jack and Rose are stranded in the Atlantic Ocean alongside their fellow passengers. The ocean water is freezing, and when Jack finds a door for Rose to float on, he urges her to get onto it.
Jack makes an attempt to also get on the door, but he runs the risk of tipping over Rose and decides to bob in the water instead. This turns out to be a fatal mistake, because by the time rescue ships arrive, Jack has frozen to death. Rose releases him to sink to the bottom of the ocean, and then she hops on a rescue boat.
The scene set off a ton of controversy at the time, with fans and critics arguing vehemently about whether or not Jack could have also fit on the door. The controversy has never really died, and the question seems to be asked any time someone remotely affiliated with the film is at an event.
In fact, while in Cannes in 2019 and promoting an entirely different film, Titanic star Leonardo DiCaprio was asked about his thoughts. His costar in his new film, Margot Robbie, jumped in, saying, "Oh my gosh, I thought it. I remember bawling my eyes out when I was a girl."
Leo immediately avoided the question, saying, "I have no comment." His other current costar, Brad Pitt, commented, "Well, I'm going to go back and look now, shoot." Margot also said, "That is the biggest controversy in modern cinema," to which Leonardo followed up, "Ever."
Leonardo's Titanic costar, Kate Winslet, played Rose. She has also fielded her fair share of questions on the topic, and she even offered up her own alternate ending for Jack while visiting the Late Show With Stephen Colbert. When asked if Jack had to die, Kate and Stephen came up with their own solution.
Solving this mystery has been a fan favorite in the years since 1997. The team on MythBusters decided to take their own crack at it. Their result? Jack could have totally climbed onto the door and survived. But then would the movie has resonated the way that it did?
As for her part, Céline happily played along, and then the conversation returned to the reason she was visiting: her new album, Courage. This is her 12th album in English, and it has been received well since it was released on November 15.
Céline also recently shared what she misses most about her late husband, René Angélil, who died in 2016. She said, "Losing my husband, my manager, the father of my kids, my friend. I feel his vibration and his support … forever."
