I Tried Using A DIY Sugar Scrub On My Dry, Chapped Lips. Here’s How They Looked Afterward

During the colder months of the year or in drier climates, our skin needs more care. It tends to get dehydrated and dry out much quicker if the correct protection isn’t used.

The same applies to lips — they get dry, and can even crack, if they aren’t looked after properly. While this isn’t a problem for everyone, it affects most of us at some point, for one reason or another. And anyone who has dealt with chapped lips before will agree that the feeling isn’t the most pleasant one.

Luckily, there are plenty of products you can use for protection and prevention. Drugstores are full of petroleum jellies and fancy scrubs that will work for most people. But there is a slight problem with them — they’re full of all kinds of strange ingredients, which may not be the healthiest long-term habit for your lips and skin.

That is the exact reason I set out to find out a more natural, homemade hydrating scrub. And after some experimenting, I succeeded in finding a remedy for my chapped lips.

What Causes Chapped Lips?

Dry, chapped lips can be caused by a variety of things. Here are a few examples:

  • Dehydration caused by smoking or alcohol
  • Dehydration caused by not drinking enough water
  • Allergic reactions
  • Side effects of medication
  • Certain health issues
  • A lack of vitamins B and C
  • An overload of vitamin A

The most common causes for dry, chapped lips are:

  • Sunburn
  • Licking of the lips
  • Biting/picking at the lips

I am personally guilty of picking at my lips when I am stressed. It’s an alternative to biting your nails. As you can see in the photo above, it’s caused my lips to go very dry and hard, as the skin keeps having to regrow.

It’s a habit I have been unsuccessfully fighting for years now, and having dry, chapped lips is what makes it worse. That’s why I was desperate to find a remedy that actually works.

How To Get Rid Of Chapped Lips

After spending quite some time researching all kinds of DIY lip hydration scrubs and masks, I found one that seemed to be repeated everywhere I looked.

If everybody talks about it, there must be something to it, right?

So I chose a version that sounded the most legitimate, jotted down the ingredients, and got to work. Here’s what to do!

Ingredients:

1. White or brown sugar
2. Honey
3. Coconut oil or olive oil

Step 1

Add half a teaspoon of honey.

Step 4

Mix everything. It might take a bit of time and effort to get it all mixed up well, especially if the coconut oil is still solid.

Step 5

Apply the mixture to your lips and scrub well to remove the dead and hardened skin.

Step 6

This sweet concoction seemed to really hydrate my lips from the moment I put it on. The scrubbing action loosened up the dead skin and got rid of most of it.

As you can see in this photo, my lips look (and feel) infinitely better — the result is clearly visible. Obviously, my lips are not perfect, but I do feel confident that if I continued this treatment for a month or so, I’d get to where I want to be.

Do I recommend you try it? Absolutely!

Cutting back on picking and biting, paired with using this natural and yummy remedy twice a week should help with most cases of chapped lips.
