When Jessica Crawford's fiancée, Alli, handed her a teddy bear, she was a little confused. He had made a whole big production about it, family was there, he even got the camera out. It was just a bear, right? Big deal. Then Jessica smelled it. Smells are deeply connected to our memories, and in an instant those memories came rushing back to Jessica.
It wasn't just some teddy bear, it was Whitey, her childhood teddy bear. He was unrecognizable. Alli knew that when Jessica was a little girl, she would run to her bear Whitey, who would soak up her tears. Over the years, Whitey lost his nose, his eyes fell out, and a dog even chewed his ear off. Later, his head was ripped off. Jessica didn't throw him away, she packed his parts up out of sight, and sort of forgot about him.
Enter Alli. He knew he wanted to get Whitey back in tip-top shape. He spent a month looking at thousands of vintage teddy bears, trying to figure out a way to reconstruct poor Whitey. He managed to discover a "doll and teddy bear hospital" where they were miraculously able to put him back together again. The makeover was so dramatic, Jessica had to do a double take, but once she smelled that familiar comforting smell, she knew it was him. Then the tears fell. Amazing!
