In 2010, Chris Norton suffered an accident while playing football that changed his life forever. He injured his spine, and doctors gave him a 3% chance of ever being able to move anything below his neck again. But Chris was determined to walk across the stage when he graduated, and with the help of his now-fiancee Emily, he beat the odds and achieved the impossible.
Emily and Chris were just girlfriend and boyfriend until the day before he graduated when he proposed to her. She'd been with him through so much already, and the next day, she was going to help him take another big step in his life… both literally and figuratively. I was so nervous when she began to help him out of his wheelchair, but once he started taking those first few steps, I knew he wasn't giving up. The last time I got such intense chills over a graduation video was when this student led the entire audience in prayer after a medical emergency happened during the ceremony.
Graduation is an incredibly emotional event for anyone walking across the stage to get their diploma, but it was even more incredible for Chris. Just like when this service dog walked for his deceased owner, Chris' special moment was also deeply moving to everyone in attendance. He overcame incredible odds to receive his diploma, and there's no doubt in my mind that he'll continue to overcome any challenges he faces with Emily by his side.
