My dad is a cigar smoker — always has been, always will be. This is a very stinky addiction that my family and I have all accepted.
Yet, along with his “dragon breath” (as my mom so eloquently calls it) his bad habit has another undesirable side effect: tons of leftover cigar boxes.
Being that my dad has smoked for the better part of 40 years, we have always been up to our ears in cigar boxes and my mom didn’t know what to do with them. She’d store loose change in them, sewing kits, safety pins, rubber bands, stamps, even family photos. But at a certain point, she just didn’t know what to do with them anymore…
However, one Reddit user has discovered a new way to use them that is so creative, I gasped. I had no idea you could actually make something so beautiful, charming, and expensive with such a throwaway item.
After seeing this post, my mom is going to be kicking herself for getting rid of so many of my dad’s old boxes…
To transform this simple cigar box into something extraordinary, Reddit user "UriahBennett" first he had to cut some holes into his cigar box.

Next he glued two Poplar 1'x2's together.

The 1'x2's were then shaped and a box and stem were added.

Then he had to cut some holes in the box to fit the glued-together 1'x2's.

Then he fit the piece into the cigar box perfectly.

Once he knew the piece fit, it was time to do a little more work on it.

Next he did a little more carving to the center piece that lays in the middle of the cigar box.

The neck then had to be very specifically shaped.

Then he added some wiring to the interior of the box.

His next step was to add a bridge.

Once the build was complete, he needed to add one last very important detail.

He added strings to the top of the stem.

The strings ran tightly across the shaft.

The strings connected to the bottom of his build.

The end result is a guitar, which usually costs between $200, out of a cigar box for just $90!

Of the cost, he said: “Way more than I promised my wife it would cost. But there was a lot or changes in design as I went along, and valuable lessons learned. The next one will be way cheaper and easier.”

But does it play? Check out the video below and see for yourself:
