Mason jars have become incredibly popular over the past few years in the realm of home decor. They're so popular, in fact, that antique aqua-colored mason jars called “ball blues” are sold at auction on eBay and turned into soap and lotion dispensers, centerpieces and even wine glasses.
First, we learned how to color tint mason jars in that perfect shade of blue. Now, it's all about taking those mason jars and turning them into fully functional lamps fit with rustic coffee can lamp shades. It's a fun, simple and cheap DIY project with a great pay-off. These babies are adorable, and I can personally attest — I've made a few of my own.
AttaGirl Says put her craftiness to the test when her mom bought her a mason jar lamp at a yard sale. The only problem was, it had no shade. Instead of throwing the lamp away, she decided to create her own lampshade using an old tin coffee can.
I'm absolutely love old mason jars and am always looking for new ways to use and/or display them. This project is perfect!

What an awesome idea! Did you know you can turn a coffee can into a shabby-chic lamp shade? It's way easier than you'd think! The hardest part is finding an actual aluminum coffee can, since most bulk coffee is sold in plastic containers or cardboard canisters.
AttaGirl Says wanted her aluminum can to look like the zinc tops you'd find on an old mason jar, since the base of her lamp was going to be a beautiful blue mason jar.
She used a Zinc Antiquing Solution, which makes it easy to give shiny new metal the patina of age. All you do is dip a rag into the solution (be sure to wear gloves) and dab it onto your metal surface until you have the desired patina. Let it dry between coats, then seal with wax if it's a surface you plan on touching a lot.
Luckily, her mason jar came already outfitted as a lamp. But don't worry — it’s super-easy to turn any mason jar into a lamp. All you need is an $11 canning jar lamp adapter, which you can buy from a craft store. Or, you could buy a lamp kit and drill a hole through a real jar lid.
Get yourself a clip-top lampshade ring and slide it into your coffee can so that it fits snugly under the rim of the can. Be sure to measure your can to get the right size lampshade ring.
This mason jar lamp makes a stunning addition to any home, whether it's turned on or off. And for under 20 bucks, it's well worth the DIY process.
