Cole Hammer became the first player born in this century to compete in four Grand Slam events when he teed off at the U.S. Open.
The Texas native is the third-youngest player after Andy Zhang and Tadd Fujikawa.
Cole managed to birdie four of his last five holes in a 36-hole sectional qualifier to beat 76 out of 77 competitors and book his place at the Seattle showpiece.
However, when he began to tee up his first hole at the U.S. Open, it appeared that he was having a bit of a breakdown. Onlookers believed Cole was holding back tears.
Though young people are often underestimated, sometimes they’re the ones who exceed our expectations, like this 9-year-old banjo player who became a viral hit.
It wouldn’t have been all that surprising if Hammer were undergoing an emotional moment. Competing amongst professionals, years your senior, is overwhelming. No one would have blamed Cole for tearing up or having a moment.
Nevertheless, when he revealed what he was really doing, he stunned everyone and proved he was mature beyond his years once again.

Though they were sympathetic, many people believed Cole was crying and fighting back the tears before his first hole during the competition.
Everyone assumed he was too young and breaking down under pressure. However, Cole clarified what was actually happening and stunned everyone.
“I always pray right before my round on the first tee,” Cole said. “That’s all I was doing. I wasn’t emotional or anything.”
