Drinking alcohol and driving simply do not go together, but sometimes we need a shocking reminder to help make our roads a little safer.
In San Diego, cops and drivers were stunned to see a car dead stopped in the middle of a busy I-805 northbound lane. When they approached the car, they found a 25-year-old woman, believed to be drunk, passed out inside. Despite trying to knock on the windows, nothing would wake her up.
Cars were zooming by and coming at full freeway speed as Officer Sergio Flores with the California Highway Patrol tried to wake the woman. Then the car started rolling, with the woman still out cold.
The police officer began chasing the car, and after a few swings, busted out a window with his flashlight. Thankfully, he was able to get inside and throw the gear shift into park. With the car stopped, he was able to get the woman out of the vehicle and safely to the side of the freeway. She was then handcuffed and arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence. It's a miracle she wasn't killed.
Despite important messages about the impact of drunk driving, like Budweiser’s brilliant commercial co-starring an adorable pup, or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s take on texting while driving, there is still an alarming number of accidents each year.
According to MADD (Mother's Against Drunk Driving), in 2013, nearly 13,000 people are killed each year in alcohol-related accidents and approximately 290,000 injured — despite increased public awareness. Everyone should see this, don’t you think?!
