Ah, the magic of base-level chemistry. Videos like the beer bottle one below are the kinds of mesmerizing tricks that we learn in eighth grade science class and which nonetheless remain fascinating feats of mystery.
But at its most basic, there isn't too much involved needed to impress friends and family with your chemistry prowess (in a controlled and safe environment, mind you). You'll just need a few items in your magician's toolbox.
Supplies:
- Fire (matches, lighter)
- Bucket of cold water
- Glass bottle
- String long enough to tie around the bottle with slack
- Acetone
- Sandpaper
Soak the string in acetone and tie it firmly around the bottle. When you’re ready to light the string, ensure that you face it away from your body or anything flammable; make sure you have your water bucket or filled sink near-at-hand. When the string has burned all the way around the bottle, pick it up (I suggest a flame-retardant oven mitt) from the coolest end, and drop it in your water bucket. Voilà!
Be careful of the newly exposed sharp end. If you plan on keeping your new bottle, use the sandpaper to smooth down any rough edges.
And a few helpful tips from the nice folks over at LifeHacker:
Make sure you don’t breathe the fumes coming from the burning acetone, and turn the bottle as it burns so that the bottle is cut evenly. If you don’t have nail polish remover handy, you can also buy pure acetone in most hardware stores in the paint section and it is also commercially marketed as a superglue remover.
