A Richmond, Indiana dad has come under fire for making his daughter wear a sign around her neck. While some think this kind of parenting is outrageous, others believe Gary Mills is giving his daughter necessary discipline.
The sign says:
“My name is Abby Mills & I am a LIAR & a THEIF [sic]! I’ve stolen from my parents, brothers & sister. Aunts & uncles. I even stole my 9-yr-old cousin’s Christmas presents.”
Apparently, his daughter Abby has been stealing from relatives. Surely, this is no small offense and any good parent would figure out a punishment that fits the crime.
Some people think "publicly shaming" children is extreme. One father was recently applauded for taking a stance against "kid shaming." Meanwhile, a 13-year-old girl, whose father publicly shamed her, recently committed suicide.
When it comes to children, most parents want what's best for their kids. Sometimes figuring out what that is can be difficult. In other situations, what may be extreme for one child may be appropriate for another.
Gary said of his daughter:
“Indiana does not have a program that allows teens to see what’s inside of a jail cell … to keep ‘em out of trouble. You can call it a little tough love or a little tough justice. This is what she’s gonna be doing today. So she can be embarrassed! So everybody knows what it’s like!… My mother always told me that I’m gonna have a child that’s 10 times worse than me. Well, here she is. Maybe this will teach her to keep her sticky fingers off other people’s property.”
Do you agree with this dad’s “tough love” approach to parenting?
