When Wanda Rodriguez went to work at Calvary Hospital in the Bronx, she thought it was just like every other workday. Instead, she got the shock of her life and reunited with someone she hadn't seen in 41 years.
I've always believed in miracles, especially after reading about the brave mother-daughter duo who battled — and beat — cancer together, but this touching story drives home the truth about the power of faith, family, and prayer.
While making her rounds, Wanda heard a doctor mention the name of a new patient that had just arrived for care. His name was Victor Peraza, and hearing that name sent shockwaves down her spine. Wanda marched into his room, introduced him to the hospital, and then started asking him questions about his family. When he said he had two daughters, one named Gina and one named Wanda, she burst out of the room in tears.
This man was her father — who walked out on her family when she was just a baby.
Once she composed herself and notified her superiors of who was in that room, Wanda was hit with even more devastating news: her father had been brought to the hospital because he was dying of cancer.
For the past several weeks, the two have mended the open wounds, and Victor has met Wanda's family, including her three children. She even comes into work several hours before her shift to spend time with her Dad. He could not be more proud of his daughter today.
"It's a miracle, it's God, it's fate, it's hope," Peraza told the NY Daily News.
If this has taught Wanda and Victor anything, it's that it's never too late for forgiveness.
