Almost everyone has some kind of memory associated with David Bowie. The musical legend broke boundaries throughout his life, creating art that will live forever in the hearts of many.

When David died in January 2016, the world was shocked. People grieved for the Starman in the streets all around the globe.

Even though he has been gone for nearly two years now, David continues to be one of the most influential and important figures in music. Many people hold David and his music close to their hearts. One woman in Wales might have every other superfan beat, though.

While out Christmas shopping with one of her daughters, Maria began to feel unwell. She turned pale and eventually collapsed in the store. The next morning, Maria's face was so swollen that she "was unrecognizable."

Maria's daughters called the doctor, who said Maria needed to get to the hospital immediately.

At the hospital, doctors learned that an abscess in Maria's tooth had turned into sepsis, making her neck and chest swell.

She went into surgery to drain the fluid, but her tongue swelled up so much that doctors needed to put Maria into a coma to help her breathe.

Maria's daughters were understandably distraught. Her daughter, Bianca, told the Daily Mail, "When I went in and saw her like that, I just broke down. Covered in wires, she looked nothing like Mum."

Maria's family came to her bedside every day. Everyone knew Maria was a huge fan of David Bowie, so nurses suggested that they play some music for her.

Four days into Maria's heartbreaking coma, something unbelievable happened.

Maria began to react to the music. Maria's daughter said they first played some music by other bands and artists, but, when David's played, everything changed.

Her daughter told the Daily Mail,

The first song on was Bowie’s “Starman.” As soon as he started singing and mum heard his voice, her arms started swaying in front. I turned the music up a little bit and we all watched in amazement, as tears streamed down Mum’s cheeks. It was like she was at a Bowie concert in her dreams, and for us it gave us hope that she was going to be ok. She’d lain there so still for days. Now, seeing her move was a massive relief, as we really didn’t think she was going pull through.

Three days later, after a full week of being in a medically induced coma, doctors said Maria was healthy enough to be woken up.

Her daughter says that, when Maria came to, she asked for Bowie first thing, forgetting that he had died last year.

Now, Maria is recovering at home with her family, who thought they would lose her forever.

Her daughter says, "We didn't know if we'd even celebrate Christmas with Mum last year, never mind have her home."

I think this really shows the power of music. In good times and hard times, music can be one of the most important factors in our lives.
