When we look at plants and flowers, we often think about how beautiful they are or how nice they smell. We may be used to our garden-variety flowers that can be found in our own yards and in flower shops.
Or course, it never crosses our minds that these plants have the capacity to kill us with one touch, taste, or whiff.
But walk into the Poison Garden at Alnwick Castle in Northumberland, England, and you'll be surprised by how deadly each and every plant is. Head Gardener Trevor Jones takes us through all the ways the plants can kill a human being, and it's truly frightening.
He even says that many of these can be found in the average garden, unbeknownst to the homeowner!
The garden was created at the command of the Duchess of Northumberland, who didn't want to plant just herbs. So gardeners brought together what is now known as "the deadliest garden" in England. Trevor and his colleagues must even wear a protective suit, as any exposed area of their skin runs the risk of coming in contact with the poisonous plants.
The collection currently has 95 specimens, but more are constantly being added.
This just proves that looks can, indeed, kill!
