Deaf Father Explains The Key To Communicating With His Hearing Family: Love

Going through life without the ability to hear is something all deaf individuals adapt to over time. What really makes a difference, of course, is the love and support they find from their family.

Often, many other members of their family will also have hearing impairments, like hunky model Nyle DiMarco and his brood of close-knit kinfolk. However, that doesn't mean those with more of a mixture aren't also able to feel the same level of unconditional affection. People like the bride who translated a song for her father–daughter dance prove just that, as do the individuals in the clip below.

The trailer is for a documentary, currently seeking funding, that focuses specifically on the relationships between hearing and non-hearing couples. Writer, director, and producer Aleatha L. Williams has long been a disabilities advocate since being diagnosed as deaf at the age of 2.

Her hope is to present a new perspective on the deaf community and culture, bridging the gap between the two communities.

As Williams explains on the film's Indiegogo page, "There is also a need for desensitizing erroneous presumptions about deaf people and giving real examples of successful interactions between the deaf and hearing."

Essentially, she's hoping to dismantle the still-lingering stigma of deaf people as unapproachable. Along with the families, the documentary will also interview several experts who have done extensive research in linguistics, relationships, and disabilities.
