It was around 8 a.m. when Denise Toomey found herself in a frightening situation. The mother of two was driving to work down a long, winding road in Tonopah, Arizona, when she passed a little boy wandering around all by himself.
As if that weren't strange enough, the 7-year-old boy was wearing nothing but a long-sleeved T-shirt and a diaper when Denise found him that morning.
In that moment, Denise, who is a professional in-home caregiver, was overcome with concern and knew that something had to be done.
She quickly turned her car around, then got out and called the cops.
In the video posted on January 9, 2017, she explains, "I was like, 'Baby come here!'Baby, baby, come here!' So I got him in the car and I buckled him up."
Soon enough, police and deputies arrived to take over where Denise had left off. They soon realized that the 7-year-old wasn't responding or communicating with them properly.
One officer from the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office said: "Detectives got on scene, deputies got on scene, and they started to notice that there was probably, you know, some type of autism situation going on with the boy. We tried to communicate with him. We weren't getting anything and that's when he was transported to a local Buckeye hospital."
Investigators sent out a photo of the young boy in order to locate his parents. Suddenly, phone calls started pouring in. It didn't take long for the 7-year-old to be reunited with his mother, whom detectives did not suspect of any abuse or neglect.
Thanks to the MSCO and one quick-thinking mom on her way to work, a little boy was saved and returned safely to his family that day.
