While concussions are often written off as a minor injury, they can be a cause for concern if not treated properly.
In turn, the Medical Director of Connecticut Children's Elite Sports Medicine decided to release a song titled "Know the Signs" to raise awareness for the importance of identifying the symptoms and treating the brain injury promptly.
"You get up, you don't feel right because you're kind of glazed by the bright lights/The headache's legit/The room's starts spinning and you don't want to quit," raps Dr. Wang, who often treats patients with concussions. "This ain't a minor injury, it's real serious!"
His lyrics reference some of the symptoms of concussions, which can include a headache, temporary loss of consciousness, dizziness, nausea, fogginess, sensitivity to light and noise, fatigue, and difficulty concentrating.
Concussions are a big issue in sports, especially since athletes either don’t recognize the symptoms or ignore them in order to continue playing. It's also worrisome that athletes can suffer from many of them throughout their career.
Much like the Ohio sheriff who released a funny dance video to send a message about drinking and driving, Dr. Wang hopes his rap music video will be able to get people to pay attention to the symptoms. He also hopes it will encourage people to get proper medical help.
