Most dog owners think that their dogs are human in some way, shape or form. They just seem to pick certain things or understand us as well as people do.
And now they’re actually doing something only humans can do. Driving.
The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) in New Zealand wants to see more shelter dogs being adopted. They thought that if more of their dogs could show potential owners how smart they were, they would have a better chance of getting adopted.
So the organization teamed up with Mini Cooper to somehow teach three lucky dogs how to drive.
The dogs chosen to get behind the wheel are named Porter, Monty and Ginny. Each went through a two month training period where they learned how to shift gears and how to work the pedals of a car, just like a human would in driver’s education classes.
But the cars they’ve been given are not quite like human ones.
Each one has a set of rigs with paw-activated accelerators and brakes since the dogs can’t quite reach the pedals of an ordinary car. And after just a few weeks of gear training, each dog learned how to sit in a car with their hands on the steering wheel.
After their training was complete and all three dogs had graduated from the program, they were asked to compete in a driving contest on national TV so the entire world could see that dogs can actually learn a few new tricks.
