At the age of 59, Doris Lewis had a non-cancerous tumor that was pressing on her internal organs. The pain and discomfort worsened as each day passed. She had trouble breathing, she was vomiting, and she couldn't even use the bathroom.
The tumor grew in size to the point doctors said her blood was literally feeding it, and slowly killing her in the process.
Doris needed the tumor removed immediately, but like many Americans, she did not have health insurance. Her husband had passed away and she was still in the process of sorting out her insurance coverage.
In the meantime, Doris took several trips to the emergency room, but was always sent home once her vitals returned to normal. Without insurance, appointments only led to more dead ends and surgery dates schedule in the way too distant future.
Then one day, Doris met her savior, Dr. Alan Gordon of Emory Healthcare. She was set up with a surgery date through Charity Care, an organization that approves medical services for uninsured patients.
Doris finally underwent the eight-hour surgical procedure she so desperately needed. Surgery was incredibly delicate as the growth was wrapped around her internal organs.
Thankfully, Dr. Gordon successfully removed the tumor and its 28 pounds of fluid.
Now, Doris has a message for anyone dealing with a medical condition but cannot find the help needed.
