For most people, middle school is a very difficult time. Peer pressure, bodily changes, and confused identities all contribute to the horror that comprises the pre-teen years. It's a trying time that makes a strong impression on many people's childhood memories.
But for Desiree Andrews, an eighth grader in Kenosha, WI, middle school holds a very unique set of challenges.
Desiree has Down syndrome, and as a cheerleader for Lincoln Middle School, she's often in the spotlight.
Typically, Desiree is treated like any other student at school. But during one particular game, as she happily cheered from the sidelines, members of the crowd began to make fun of Desiree.
When the basketball team noticed this, they wasted no time in reacting. Onlookers were shocked by the young athletes' response — but none were more shocked than Desiree.
Now, what began as a normal basketball game has transformed into a school-wide movement.
