20 Girls Are Sent Home For ‘Too Much Shoulder’ So Boys Show Up The Next Day In Same Outfits

When I was in high school, our shorts and skirts had to be long enough to touch our fingertips. I'll admit that sometimes there was discrepancy as to which finger, but it was fairly relaxed other than that one little rule.

With that said, not everyone is so lucky as to have relative dress code freedom. It seems like you read about a girl getting kicked out of school for an "inappropriate outfit" almost every day.

Not surprisingly, female students end up being disproportionately targeted for most dress code violations.

Of course, girls' clothing styles can tend to be more revealing than boys'. However, there is always an underlying concern of sexism, and what is and isn't fair.

When over 20 girls were kicked out of San Benito High School in California for dress code violations on their first day of school, they were obviously upset. But the boys were angry too, because they didn't like the way their female friends and relatives were being publicly shamed by school administrators.

San Benito High School in Hollister, California, began school on August 14.

As you can imagine, the school's 3,000 students were excited to sport their first-day-of-school outfits.

However the excitement stopped when over 20 girls were cited for dress code violations and sent home for wearing off-shoulder tops.

Some students are shown here wearing off-shoulder tops, which you can see are not exactly overly revealing.

One Twitter user and San Benito student shared:

My sister, along with 20 other grisl, got SENT home for showing their SHOULDERS #sexist #letgirlslearn

As expected, the girls who had been cited were outraged, but so were many other students who recognized that the rule is a little inappropriate itself.

Consequently, many male students decided to borrow their friends' off-shoulder tops and make a real statement.

Many showed up to school in "revealing" off-the-shoulder tops to showcase the unfair dress code.

By revealing their own shoulders, they demonstrated just how silly the rule really is.

In fact, some students even pointed out how girls have been permitted to wear off-shoulder tops in their senior portraits.

One Twitter user and student wrote, "Since they want a dress code all girls for showing too much shoulder, EXPLAIN THIS."

According to Yahoo, the off-shoulder rule has been in place for years, but it has never been enforced until this first day of school in 2017.

However, the rule technically applies to strapless shirts and tube tops; long-sleeved shirts that show the collarbone and tops off the shoulders don't really seem to qualify.

It's no wonder the boys at San Benito decided to stand up for their female friends.

Since the first day, many male students have been enjoying their time at school wearing the shirts.

They've been rocking trendy off-shoulder tops for days now, to highlight the double standard.

The point has been taken by the school administration, and the principal has given a statement in response.

In the statement, which was posted on the San Benito High School Facebook page, Principal Adrian Ramirez acknowledges that the "no strapless or tube top" rule in the student handbook might need to be revisited.
