Most of us have experienced pretty blustery days at some point in our lives, but people who live in Iceland probably laugh at your definition of "windy." You see, the wind is so intense there that if you rent a car, the dealership will warn you to be careful opening the door to the vehicle due to the many incidents of car doors being blown clean off. When Mark Tretter visited the breezy country, he learned firsthand that Mother Nature has no problem pushing you around. He wanted to show everyone just how strong the wind was, but instead of using fancy scientific instruments, he used something much simpler: a single bottle of water.
The people, creatures, and terrain of Iceland are all built tough, which is one reason why horse owners are able to keep this crazy but amazing tradition going with their beloved animals. I've always dreamed of visiting the country's legendary volcanoes, but until I saw this video, I had no idea that the wind was so intense! It's kind of hilarious watching Mark try to stay on his feet, but I know if that were me, I would have been knocked over the second I stepped out into the breeze.
According to some of the comments on the video, Mark is actually a science teacher. He estimates that the wind that day was moving between 70–80 mph. To put that in perspective, the windiest major cities in the USA (New York City and Oklahoma City) have an average wind speed of just over 12 mph. It's no wonder poor Mark couldn't get a drop to drink!
I absolutely loved Mark's method of showing us just how strong the wind was in this amazing country. If this video is any indication of how he is in the classroom, I bet his students have a blast and learn a lot every time they sit down at their desks. I know I would have loved to have had such a creative teacher educating me about the weather!
