Duke is a very special young bull, who now has a second shot at a happy and healthy life.
Duke was born with dwarfism. In cows, as in humans, this can mean shorter limbs and a shortened spine, which can make walking difficult.
He was rejected and attacked by the other cows in his herd, which added painful injuries to the trouble he already had with walking and using his legs. The farmer he belonged to planned to shoot him, since he had no monetary value.
Fortunately, the good people at Calf Connection, like their colleagues at Sanctuario Gaia, were able to step in. They brought Duke back to their sanctuary to settle in with other animals saved from dangerous situations. But little Duke’s troubles aren’t over yet.
He spent months in severe pain, unable to use his legs. His rehabilitators at Calf Connection brought in a chiropractor to help him regain movement, but he was still finding it very painful to try to walk more than a few steps.
A GoFundMe account was eventually launched, in the hopes of finding Duke something that would help support him while he got the use of his legs back. Now, Duke is taking a page from Zvika the turtle's book. He has a brand-new wheeled brace, which will allow him to try out his legs without putting too much weight on them.
As the folks at Calf Connection say, he’s ‘moooo-ving again!’ And if this amazing story mooo-ved you, please SHARE on Facebook!
