Army Corporal Brian Prevard, 57, was told he had only days left to live. With his liver and kidneys failing, the veteran had one final wish that was seemingly an impossible one to ever achieve.
His wish was humble enough: He dreamed that he could have the final honor of being buried in his full dress uniform. The only problem was that this dream would never come to fruition; the squad leader's uniform had been destroyed years ago in a house fire.
Figuring that he would never be buried in his dress uniform, he bravely went forward, preparing himself for the inevitable.
"Just a matter of time. I'm just dealing with it every day," he calmly said about his disease.
But everything changed when a simple Facebook post brought attention to Prevard's story. A hospice caretaker described his final wish, and as his last wish spread. When fellow veteran Dave Emmons saw the Facebook post, he was moved to action.
Emmons talked to the veteran's old unit, talked to a few generals and fellow soldiers of all ranks. A lot of people jumped on the idea of giving this veteran his final wish, and with a little bit of effort, they managed to give Corporal Prevard an incredibly special gift.
Though this story is bittersweet, at the very least, in this man's final hours, we can give him the respect he's earned and deserves as a human being and a veteran of our nation's military.
Please SHARE Prevard's beautiful story, and please let a veteran know that you're thankful for their sacrifices!
