Like many artists, Edgar Artis is inspired by the world around him. Whether it's an expansive view across a city or an ocean, or the tiny petals of a bright flower, he uses his surroundings to create fantastical, high-fashion dress designs.
But unlike many artists, Edgar doesn't just use his surroundings as inspiration. He literally uses them to create his artwork, combining the real world with his drawings.
At first glance, his creations look like the kinds of fashion drawings you might see in a magazine or on the package for a dress pattern.
But look closer, and you'll see that the real world is very much part of the dresses he's created. That's because his dresses are actually windows, and the patterns you're seeing are the views beyond!
His artwork is a great way to turn things that aren't normally associated with fashion into just that, the way one designer turned kids' drawings into wearable art at a fashion benefit show.
Check out his work below, and see if they don't inspire you to start seeing the world around you a little differently!

Edgar uses paintings, vistas, buildings, and just about anything to create patterns for his "dresses."

He makes these by drawing a dress (and a model) and then carefully cutting out the dress area. Now, depending on where he holds it, the dress can have any pattern and color!

By isolating the patterns he sees out in the world from their everyday context, he turns them from fixed objects into abstract patterns.

A tree in autumn over an average street becomes a stunning, classic gown when held at just the right angle.

Even something as mundane as a streetlight through a rain-flecked window becomes a glittering cocktail dress if you can see it in a different way.

He also uses the reverse technique: instead of putting something behind his design, he sometimes piles things on top.

Flowers make a great choice, and his creations look like the outfits forest fairies might wear to a party!

The different textures and shapes make for different effects, and even evoke the idea of certain kinds of fabric.

And flowers are great, but he also uses other items. A broken CD might not be useful anymore, but it makes a great disco ball of a dress!

And sprinkles make for the perfect party dress!

He even uses some unexpected materials, like these burned matches for a dramatic look.
