Ten years ago, you wouldn't have been wrong to call Jessica Rasdall and Rohom Khonsari enemies.
Rasdall, a freshman in college at the time in February 2006, was out partying with her longtime best friend, Laura Gorman. The two had known each other since kindergarten.
Afterward, Rasdall drove intoxicated with Gorman in the car. Five minutes before dropping off her best friend, Rasdall crashed into a tree. Gorman, 18, died instantly.
The devastating outcome emphasizes the dangers of driving while under the influence, as we've seen through the mom who lost her baby in a similar situation.
Prosecutor Rohom Khonsari was called to the scene of the accident, and that's where his anger for Rasdall grew. Although Rasdall begged for forgiveness, Khonsari wanted her to get the maximum sentence of 15 years.
"I despised her. I didn't think these talks that she was doing were genuine," Khonsari told ABC Action News. "And she obviously looked at me as the enemy."
After serving four years of jail time, Rasdall was at restaurant one night, where, by chance encounter, she saw Khonsari. That's when everything changed.
They now travel the country together, sharing their story in hopes that it will help others to make the right decision.
"If one life is saved because of this, it is worth all the pain that it has caused," Rasdall said.
