Lesley Weaver Platek watched in amazement as she witnessed five black bears — a massive mama bear and her four babies.
In what appears to be a typical Sunday drive among the mountains turned out to be quite an exciting show for the family driving along the country road in Banner Elk in Avery, NC.
In the video, posted on Facebook by Betsy Hollis Walker, you can hear her friend, Weaver Platek, and her family in awe of the five black bears walking in front of their car and then making their way up the mountain.
“We have had a bear visitor in our yard, but nothing as exciting as this! Gotta love Mountain Life!” wrote Hollis Walker in the caption.
Many families' mountain adventures have turned into similar exciting scenes, including two bears playing in the middle of the road in Montana's Glacier National Park and a hiker who had a close encounter with two black bears. But seeing an entire bear family is even more thrilling.
Banner Elk is located in the mountains of western North Carolina and offers an array of outdoor activities, including skiing, golfing, hiking, horseback riding, rafting, and fishing, but if you’re considering visiting, you might want to keep an eye out for these guys!
Fellow bear lovers and wildlife enthusiasts shared their amazement, caution, and advice for the black bear witnesses via Facebook.

“Wow! That would shut Alabama down!!!” added Becky Pinckard Turman.
