A few moments into this family's home video from the year 1990, and you'll probably think, "So what? This is boring! Next!" But what it reveals is something very powerful, and families across the country should take note.
With a video that looks dated to the point of vintage, this is a simple family doing simple things on a lazy summer afternoon. Dad takes his camera outside and films his young sons selling lemonade to a neighbor with a stand they set up on the corner while Mom watches from the porch. Later, the boys play their instruments outside and make up songs together. They invite Dad to join in on the fun, in between cuddles with the family dog that's lounging on the grass. But there's something missing from this video — there are no iPhones, no laptops, no video games — just a family making real, human connections. If this video was shot today, there would most likely be scenes filmed inside — missing out on the gorgeous weather — as the kids gather around the TV or play on a smartphone, heads down and disconnected from conversation.
It's crazy to look back at what life was like a few decades ago, and see how things have changed. This may be a simple video, but that's exactly the point.
