Southern pastor Reuben Lee didn't think it was a big deal to take his 17-year-old adopted son to see a PG-13 movie. Reuben took his son Reuben Jr. and six other teens to see the movie accompanied by a church deacon.
While the rest of the group headed in, Rueben and Jr. were stopped at the door by the manager. The manager insisted Jr. needed a guardian to see the film. When Reuben said he was the teen's father, the manager refused to believe him.
"We’re this far along in life and, you know, you’re stuck as a parent trying to figure out how you’re going to explain to this man that I really am this child’s parent,” Reuben said.
Reuben is white and his adopted son is black; the rest of the group was black as well. Reuben believes that the manager just couldn't accept that a black son could have a white father. It seems odd because we all know adoption exists, and we've even seen mothers even give birth to children with different skin tones.
"I said, 'This is my son, I’m their guardian, they’re with me…' I was not allowed in,” he said. "He sort of smirked and said, ‘Well, like I said, parent, grandparent, legal guardian, you need to call one of them and have them come over here if you want to get in.’”
They were denied entry, refunded, and escorted off the property by an armed guard.
"At some point you want him to realize, ‘Oh, wow, I was wrong. I’m sorry. You know, I should have let you in,’” he said.
