This story makes my heart so happy!
Fawn the calf had a very rough start in life, just like these animals that lived most of their lives in cages. Her mother lived her life chained to a milking stall that didn't even leave her enough room to turn around. When she gave birth to Fawn, the poor baby fell right into a concrete manure pit, where she hit her head and front knee. The farm manager called a woman named Jennifer to pick up the poor animal, since she'd expressed interest before in keeping a cow as a pet. However, he informed her that the calf probably wouldn't make it much longer.
Jennifer was determined to save the baby, and spent her time bottle-feeding her and keeping her warm and safe. Tragically, though, the veterinarian who originally saw Fawn misdiagnosed her, and so her injured knee only became worse. Soon, poor Fawn was only getting around by hobbling on her front knees. To Jennifer's despair, the vet recommended that the calf be put down since she'd never walk again. But all that changed when Jennifer called Woodstock Sanctuary. The rescue got a hold of the vets at Cornell University, who performed what could only be considered a medical miracle. They operated on both of Fawn's front legs (since the ligaments had been shortened on her "good" leg because of the added strain), and that was the beginning to the calf's incredible turnaround.
Four months after the surgery, Fawn is walking upright with the help of some soft braces. I couldn't keep the smile off my face when I watched her romping in the snow! She looks so happy! Just as these nearly frozen horses were saved from the brink of death, this amazing little cow survived incredible odds thanks to the help of some determined people who refused to give up on her.
