Firefighters Save Beloved Chief’s Life During Routine Training Excercise

As citizens, we're used to our emergency response crews coming to our aid when we find ourselves struck down by an unexpected setback.

Whether they're helping us out of a sticky situation or going above and beyond the call of duty to show how much they care for every member of their community, it's comforting to know there is always someone out there who will have our backs.

That goes for the men and women working alongside them, too, as Middleton Fire Department Chief Frank Twiss learned firsthand after falling ill recently. In fact, he was in the middle of a training session with his crew when he suddenly started feeling under the weather.

His team quickly realized Twiss was experiencing a heart attack and began providing CPR as well as using the AED defibrillator to keep him stable until an ambulance could arrive.

Now recovering at the hospital where he was treated for three major blockages, Twiss couldn't be more grateful to the men who saved his life. It also happened to occur on the day before he was scheduled for retirement, something he says has helped him decide on what to focus his free time on: educating others on the same emergency skills that kept him alive.

Though his team was only doing what they were trained for, you can tell they were all a little shaken up to have something like this happen so close to home.
