The latest heroes we've encountered are a group of young firefighters in training from California's Contra Costa County Fire Protection District.
One day during training, they heard strange squeaking and scratching noises from a nearby dumpster that was about to be emptied.
Fortunately, these young men were extremely alert and quick on their feet, and decided to investigate further.
They peered into the dirty dumpster, and found the eyes of two newborn kittens staring back up at them.
These adorable little babies are now cared for at Tony La Russa's Animal Rescue Foundation, and have grown attached to a wonderful mommy cat.
Let's give it up for these firefighters and others who have saved animals from perilous situations and given them a second chance at life.

Days ago, a group of firefighters in training at the Contra Costa County Fire Protection District in Pleasant Hill, CA, rescued two newborn kittens from a dumpster.
The firemen were in the middle of their training when they suddenly heard soft meowing sounds coming from a nearby dumpster that was about to be emptied.
They rushed to it, and saw two kittens who looked around 10 days old.
“Thanks to their extra-alert senses and quick thinking, they saved these babies from what would have been a heartbreaking fate,” wrote Tony La Russa’s Animal Rescue Foundation in a Facebook post.
Tony La Russa’s Animal Rescue Foundation has since taken in the two kittens, and named them Miracle and Milagro (which means “miracle” in Spanish).
The babies were paired up with Shannara, a mom cat who had recently finished weaning her own kittens.
She instantly took the rescued kittens under her wing, and is nursing them back to health.
“She heard them crying,” Ashley Thiry, a spokeswoman for the shelter, told the San Francisco Chronicle.
“She was chirping and looking for them really desperately.”
We are glad that the heroic firefighters saved the kittens just in time, and they’re now getting a second chance at life.
