A Florida teacher is being accused of having a sexual relationship with one of her students. The 41-year-old teacher, Heiry Calvi, was released from jail this weekend after posting bond following her arrest last week.
Calvi is suspected of having an inappropriate relationship with a 15-year-old former student. Last spring, the student allegedly showed friends a video of the two of them having sex. Eventually, students reported the alleged statutory rape to authority figures.
Following her arrest, Calvi reportedly revealed her pregnancy during the intake process at the jail. But that's not the most shocking part of the story. Calvi is actually the third South Florida teacher to face charges for inappropriate actions with a student in just a week.
According to the police report, the student said that the sexual encounters were all consensual. However, a 15-year-old is still a minor.
"A child does not have the legal authority to give consent even though the child may say 'this is OK,'" Rey Valdes, a police spokesperson, previously told the Miami Herald. "The responsibility is on the adult."
It is not known whether or not the boy is confirmed to be the father of the baby. But it's certainly alarming that Calvi is now revealing her pregnancy, further complicating the situation.
According to the police report, Calvi had taught the 15-year-old at the John I. Smith K-8 Center. But then she began tutoring the student at his home. During that time, the two reportedly grew close.
The allegations were reported to a principal and a school resource officer back in March. When the student's phone was searched, evidence pointed to a relationship with Calvi.
There were "photographs that were certainly inappropriate, that indicate that there was in fact an inappropriate relationship," Valdes said.
They also discovered messages on the texting app WhatsApp that said "I love you," as well as evidence that the student had been using Calvi's credit card. Another rather telling piece of evidence was an audio recording of the 15-year-old telling someone to deny that they knew about the relationship.
A statement from the school district was released saying that when the district learned of the allegations, it reassigned the teacher to a "non-school site location."
But the district did not report any prior disciplinary actions taken against Calvi. She is now being charged with several different offenses, including lewd and lascivious battery, child neglect, and others.
