Three friends who were home from college for a football game, couldn't stop thinking about what they saw earlier in the day – a deer trapped in a hole on one of the boy's family farm.
Northeast Iowa definitely falls within "buck country". Deer hunting isn't just a sport or hobby, but a way of life. However, the area's limestone covered terrain can erode into some dangerous sinkholes, creating big problems from the deer that run rampant.
Eric Smorstad and his two friends couldn't stop thinking about the 10-point buck they encountered stuck in Smorstad's parents' farm, so after their game, they returned, determined to ethically free the deer.
The buck didn't budge easily, but these guys were determined to let him see another day and not spend the winter in a sinkhole – or as someone's prize. Smorstad's friend posted the footage on YouTube saying, "To share that experience is what we were going for, not to simply save an animal’s life, although I do show tremendous respect for the animals that I hunt.”
These guys are a great example for their community and young peers! What an awesome rescue!
