CO Police Praise Hero For Risking Her Own Life To Rescue Kids Who Fell Through Frozen Pond

A frozen pond in Arapahoe County, Colorado, looked like fun to play on. But three kids learned the hard way how dangerous that can be. Luckily, a bystander was there to dive in — literally.

Dusti Talavera was looking out her window when she saw the children playing on the ice. "Before I even realized it, I was out there on the middle of the pond pulling two kids out," she said in a press conference. She fell in the pond herself in the process.

It's a good thing she stepped in, though, because one of those kids needed lifesaving measures. Now Dusti is being called a hero.

The 6-year-old girl wasn't breathing when first responders arrived on the scene. But with a bit of effort, they were able to change that. She started crying, a signal that she was going to be OK, before she was taken to a local hospital.

Corey Sutton, a firefighter who was on the scene, got emotional talking about the brave bystander's efforts. "I hope that if this happened to one of mine that somebody like her was close by," he said of his own children.
