A manicure may look pretty at the nail salon, but it’s no secret that it’s not durable. It lasts a few days before it starts chipping, and sometimes even that is being generous.
That’s why a gel manicure has become the ultimate solution for many: It’s fairly quick and it lasts for about two weeks.
But experts are saying these gel manicures can pose a threat to your health because of the exposure to ultraviolet lights during the drying process.
“UV light causes aging of skin and it also predisposes you to skin cancer depending on how much dose you get. The more UV light you get the more likely you are to be susceptible to getting skin cancer,” dermatologist Dr. Christopher Obeime told FOX’s Indianapolis affiliate.
These are essentially the same lights found in tanning beds. While the skin isn’t being exposed for the same duration as a trip to the tanning salon, skincare specialist Nicole Bell says it can still damage your skin in the same way.
A solution: LED lights. Some salons use these lights, which produce less radiation and dry the nails more quickly.
“With UV that light can penetrate through the skin and actually make the DNA to mutate and that’s what causes skin cancer,” Bell said. “The LED doesn’t do that.”
